### Lesson Plan: Writing Simple Sentences (Year 1)
**Subject:** Language Arts
**Grade Level:** Year 1
**Duration:** 1 hour
**Topic:** Writing Simple Sentences
**Objectives:**
1. Students will be able to identify the components of a simple sentence (subject, verb, and object).
2. Students will be able to construct simple sentences using these components.
3. Students will practice writing, reading, and illustrating simple sentences.
**Materials:**
- Whiteboard and markers
- Picture cards (various common nouns and verbs)
- Worksheets with sentence starters and blank spaces
- Pencils and erasers
- Colouring pencils or crayons
- Sentence strips
- Word cards
**Introduction (10 minutes):**
1. Begin with a brief discussion about what a sentence is. Explain that a sentence tells a complete thought and usually has a subject, a verb, and often an object.
2. Write a simple sentence on the board, e.g., "The dog runs."
3. Break down the sentence, identifying the subject, verb, and object. ("The dog" is the subject and "runs" is the verb.)
**Activity 1: Sentence Building (15 minutes):**
1. Divide the class into small groups and hand out sets of picture cards.
2. Instruct the students to pick one picture card and create a simple sentence about it.
3. Each group will share their sentence with the class.
4. Write some of the sentences on the board to give various examples.
**Activity 2: Worksheet Completion (15 minutes):**
1. Hand out worksheets that have partially completed sentences. For example:
- The cat _______.
- The boy _______.
2. Guide students to fill in the blanks with appropriate verbs. Encourage them to think of fun and creative verbs.
**Activity 3: Sentence Strips (10 minutes):**
1. Provide each student with a sentence strip.
2. Ask them to write one simple sentence on their strip.
3. Allow students to draw a picture to illustrate their sentence.
4. Display the completed sentence strips around the classroom.
**Independent Practice (5 minutes):**
1. Hand out word cards with simple nouns and verbs.
2. Instruct students to independently form a simple sentence using one noun and one verb from the word cards.
3. Ask them to write their sentence in their exercise books.
**Plenary (5 minutes):**
1. Gather the students and discuss what they learned about writing simple sentences.
2. Review a few examples of students’ sentences.
3. Praise their efforts in identifying the components of a sentence and constructing their own.
**Assessment:**
- Observe students during group activities and provide feedback.
- Review completed worksheets for correct subject-verb-object usage.
- Assess the sentences written on strips for understanding and creativity.
**Differentiation:**
- Provide extra support by working one-on-one with students who struggle.
- Challenge advanced students by asking them to add an adjective to their sentences.
**Extension:**
- Encourage students to create a short story using several of their simple sentences.
- Practice simple sentence structures through interactive games or digital applications.
By the end of this lesson, students should feel more confident in identifying and writing simple sentences, using a clear structure that includes a subject and a verb.
